  This is easily my favourite restaurant in Merseyside. We come over from Liverpool whenever we can. Superb food (seafood and beef are my personal highlights here but everything I've had in numerous visits has been wonderful), and a greeting and service so warm and personal that we feel like increasingly close family friends rather than just customers.
  
  The surroundings are unpretentious, and the food comes down from a small kitchen staffed only by Piero himself, and his son Alan. Dawn, who presides downstairs, is Alan's mother and Piero's wife.
  
  Tonight I again had swordfish carpaccio with soft green peppercorns, lemon, oil and dill. It's the first thing I ever had there and its simplicity and freshness keep me asking for more. Then onto sirloin steak (the menu gratifyingly warns that the chefs aren't willing to overcook it), which is richly flavoured and set off by a sharply intense caper sauce.
  
  The ice creams make an irresistible home-made finale. Pistachio is the most outstanding but they're all at the top end of Italian gelato.
  
  It's a little more expensive than most local Italians, but it's very good value for really first-rate food like this. If you like good Mediterranean food and can get to Irby, eat here.
